Tank cleaning and disinfection
Water tank cleaning and disinfection
Cold water storage tanks should be inspected every year. We clean and disinfect them when the inspection shows it is needed.
The annual inspection
- Condition of the tank and its lid.
- Insect screens and the overflow.
- Sediment and biofilm and any debris.
- Water temperature in the tank.
- Photographs for your records.
Cleaning and disinfection
When the inspection finds sediment or contamination we drain and clean the tank. We then disinfect it with chlorine and flush it through before it goes back into service. The work follows HSG274 and BS 8558.
We also disinfect after repairs or when a tank has been out of use. You get a report with photographs before and after.
Cleaning on a schedule is often wasted money
HSE guidance asks for an annual inspection. It asks for cleaning when that inspection shows it is needed. A clean tank with a good lid and screens may go years without one. We will tell you honestly which you have.
Upgrades that prevent problems
Many tank problems come from a poor lid or a missing insect screen. Fixing those is often cheaper than repeated cleaning. We can quote for both.
Questions
Common questions
How long will the water be off?
It depends on the size of the tank and the system. Most tanks are back in service the same day. We plan the work around your building.
Do all buildings have a water tank?
No. Many smaller buildings run straight from the mains. Your risk assessment will show whether you have stored water.
How often should a tank be cleaned?
Only when the annual inspection shows it is needed. Some tanks need it every year. Others go much longer.
